We want everyone to be able to read and use this website, whether they use a keyboard, a screen reader, a magnifier or a phone. This is our accessibility statement.
The standard we aim for
We aim for WCAG 2.2, level AA, the level that European law and the standard EN 301 549 refer to. This statement is a self-assessment: the site has not been audited by an independent body.
How the site was checked
On 30 September 2026 we checked all pages with the automated testing tool axe-core in a desktop and a phone layout, and by hand: with the keyboard only, at 200 % zoom and at a width of 320 pixels, and with the system setting for reduced motion. Based on these checks we believe that all pages meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. Automated tools find only part of all barriers, so please tell us if you find one.
What is in place:
- A link at the start of every page that skips to the main content.
- Every function can be used with a keyboard, and the keyboard focus is always visible.
- Images have text alternatives; decorative images are hidden from assistive technology.
- The colour contrast of text and controls meets the required ratios, and text can be enlarged without losing content.
- Animations are switched off automatically if your device is set to reduce motion.
- The photo viewer can be used with the keyboard, offers zoom buttons as an alternative to gestures, and moves focus into the viewer and back.
Known limits
- The 3D Earth on the project page Mapping Blue Marble is decorative and cannot be explored with a screen reader. The same page says in text what it shows, and the satellite view can be switched off.
- Some older pictures in our archive are drawings, collages or screenshots that are hard to describe in a few words. Their descriptions say what they show, but not every detail.
- Websites of partners that we link to are not covered by this statement.
